Nambu World: First National Census Commemorative Medal

This medal was awarded to commemorate Japan’s first national census and is covered on page 59 of OMJAS. It is 30mm (1-3/16”) in diameter and 2.70mm (0.108”) thick.

Here is the back of the medal. It has the usual style of clasp on the ribbon.

OMJAS describes the figure on the front as a “local official of the Taika Era (645AD) holding in his hand a scroll of a family register”.

The date is written in the curved arcs of characters at the top and bottom. The top arc reads from right to left: tai-sho-kyu-nen (Taisho 9, i.e. 1920). The bottom arc says ju-gatsu-ichi-nichi, “October 1”. The upper horizontal row of characters is koku-sei-cho-sa, “National Census”. The lower row is ki-nen-sho, “commemorative medal”.
